Triptych
In 2002, Nottingham-based performer Salamander Tandem presented ‘Triptych’. An inspiring group of women collaborating in visual research and sensory movement, they set my world into motion creatively. In this work defining the layers of body and soul, their dynamic movement combines with sound and visuals in an expressive multimedia performance. The images focus on form and constructed space and the layering of space seen and unseen, depicting both confined and fluid elements in their narrative, a truly inspirational work and collective of women!

The Leominster Cathedral took on a unique Gothic backdrop for the performance, as the movement opened up questions of ‘Sacred Space’ and the female figure in religion and art. The Gamelan, a subtly resonant percussion instrument, was used to set the scene, along with projections and perspex cubes mirroring the interiors of the triptych. The light and shadows in the vast space were selective. In the images, there was internal and external lighting, creating contrast and accenting the medieval architecture, setting a dramatic tone, illuminating the height and breadth of ancient space, rich in myth and history. Filmed on a manual medium format Yashica-D camera, with an external flash, the movement and grainy painterly quality is intentional in the low lighting, to both absorb the natural/set lighting and to feel the atmosphere of the performance within the Cathedral’s interior.
